MASSACHUSETTS -- A man with a long criminal history has been charged with killing a 6-month old kitten, according to the Yarmouth police.
Randall B. Newell, Jr., 46, of 38 Jerusha Lane, was arrested Tuesday for animal cruelty and the killing, maiming or poisoning of a cat.
At 10:10 p.m. Tuesday, the police arrived at 38 Jerusha Lane, where Patrol Officer Nicholas Giammarco met with the homeowner of the rental property, who told Giammarco someone had just crushed a kitten's head, said Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos.
Another resident hysterically told the officer that Randy Newell had just killed a kitten.
The police officer observed a dead and bloodied orange cat, wrapped in a towel, he stated. The kitten was named Simba.
Giammarco cautiously approached Newell, who has more than 48 prior criminal charges in Massachusetts. Newell was sitting on the edge of a bed, his pants covered in blood spatter.
Police said he made an aggressive move but after being threatened with an electronic control device, complied with the orders to stand. He was handcuffed and placed under arrest.
The Yarmouth Police Department has been to 38 Jerusha Lane approximately 100 times in the past year for incidents involving disturbances, drug offenses, intoxicated persons, assaults, noise complaints and other issues, Xiarhos stated.
There are several ongoing criminal and civil investigations by the Yarmouth Police Department Proactive Anti-Crime Unit and the town of Yarmouth Code Enforcement Team associated with the property, the landlord or tenants, the police said.
Anyone with additional information about this incident or residence is asked to contact Yarmouth Police Department Lieutenant Patrick Carty at 508-775-0445 extension 2116.
