Utica Man Charged with Animal Cruelty, Accused of Burning Dog

NEW YORK -- A Utica man has been charged in an animal abuse case.

A 10-month-old pit bull was found in the city's Cornhill neighborhood with severe burns on its back. He was ultimately named Tommy by police, after fallen officer Thomas Lindsey.

SPCA investigators took over the case.

Police charged Gary Odell, 51, with a felony count of aggravated animal cruelty and a misdemeanor count of torturing and injuring animals.

Investigators say Odell poured a caustic liquid on the dog's back, causing a burn and fur loss.

The dog is being cared for by the SPCA, and they say his condition is improving.
