Dead dog found in crate along road

CALIFORNIA -- A dog was found dead Monday inside a pet carrying crate left along Old Highway 395 in North County,

An officer with county Animal Services responded to a report about 1:30 p.m. and found the dog, a female Boston Terrier, said Dan DeSousa, deputy director of the department.

He said the dog had been dead several days.

The animal did not have microchip or tags, and there was no identifying information on the kennel, he said. Authorities don’t know who the owner was and no investigation is planned.

“Unfortunately, in cases like these, without any witnesses to definitively say they saw a person dump the kennel on the side of the road with the dog still alive … there is no way to investigate this incident,” he said.

The dog was left on the side of the rural highway, about a half-mile north of Lilac Road.
Anita Timboe, 77, said she was headed home from a Bible study class when she saw the kennel about noon Monday.

“Something in my head said ‘That doesn’t look right,’” she said. Timboe dropped off her friends, then returned to the scene — with her husband in tow — and found the dog inside of the crate.

“If there had been an ounce of life in him, he would be in my arms on his way to the hospital,” Timboe said of the dog. She later added, “To me, this is animal cruelty.”
