TEXAS -- Three juveniles abused 30 animals, killing one of them, as they vandalized La Villa High School’s barn on Saturday night, school officials say.
La Villa Independent School District Superintendent Judith M. Solis said she received the call Sunday, and when she arrived to the school she saw extensive damage.
“They jerked the animals around and some had scratches,” she said. “They just made a mess, a total mess. They threw everything all over.”
Solis said the vandals scattered the animals’ feed all over the barn, broke a waterline, and let the animals out of the cages. Some of the animals looked like they had been whipped and jerked around, but the only casualty was a black-and-white lamb that was found dead outside the barn, she said.
The school district increased its security on Sunday and the three juveniles have since been caught and will be facing charges, Solis said.
Police officers were able to track the vandals’ footsteps which led to a home nearby where the suspects were found and arrested, she said. None of the juveniles are students at La Villa ISD, but Solis said she will be notifying school officials from the nearby districts where they attend.
The animals – which include goats, pigs, lambs and a steer — are part of the school’s Future Farmers of America program and had been raised by students since the fall.
Solis said the students are preparing for a stock show on Thursday, but for now they are just making sure the animals are healthy.
Solis and the school’s Principal Maribel Elizondo were the first on the scene, but it didn’t take long for teachers, parents and students involved in the agricultural program to show up and help clean the place and nurture the animals, according to Solis.
