MCSO investigating zebras, other animals reportedly involved in Phoenix animal cruelty situation

ARIZONA -- An animal hoarding and cruelty investigation involving zebras is under way in the north Valley, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office says.

Deputy Enriquez with MCSO tweeted Monday afternoon that investigators from the Animal Crimes Unit were on scene at a property located near 27th Avenue and Desert Hills Drive.

Officials compared the collection of animals to 'Noah's Ark', saying there appeared to be at least two of each animal. More than 100 animals are believed to have been kept at the home (of retired police officer Andrea Mikkel).

MCSO says this case is one of the worst cases they've ever seen.

Air15 was over the property where horses, donkeys, zebras and other large animals were spotted.
Roosters, sheep, chickens, pigs, miniature horses, rabbits and more were also said to be at the home.

Authorities reported animal cages and unhealthy conditions inside the home. Feces were found on the homeowners bed and furniture and nearly a foot deep in the garage.

The animals will be taken to be housed at MCSO's Tent City area, but wildlife specialists are coming in to take care of the zebras.

MCSO has reportedly been working this case for two weeks after neighbors complained of a bad odor, but got a search warrant for the property Monday.

Authorities say the animals had no proper shelter, water, food or medical attention.

The owner has been detained by police and could face a felony charge for each animal violation.
