Woman in Phoenix animal hoarding case, Andrea Mikkel, swallows soda tab to avoid jail

ARIZONA -- Maricopa County officials say a 61-year-old woman (retired police officer Andrea Mikkel) being questioned after more than 100 animals, including two zebras, were found on her property, "ripped" an aluminum tab off a soda can and swallowed it in front of detectives.

The tab became stuck in her throat and she was transported to the hospital where she was admitted, according to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office spokesman Joaquin Enriquez.

Police believe this was the woman's attempt to avoid going to jail.

Deputies found numerous animals, including zebras, horses, roosters and chickens, living inside the and outside the home around the property. All of the animals were living in poor conditions without food, water and shelter.

Enriquez said officials found 2 zebras, 16 cats, 15 birds, 11 dogs, 4 miniature horses, 3 pigeons, 2 horses, a pig, rooster, chicken and a rabbit. It was even compared to "Noah's Ark."

The birds consisted of parakeets, cockatoos and small birds. The dogs included a English Bull Dog, Chihuahua, beagles and mixed breeds.

Officials said deputies have been investigating the case for two weeks after neighbors reported a serious smell coming from woman's home. MCSO said feces was found throughout the house and even on the homeowner's bed, where she reportedly slept.

MCSO said the homeowner faces misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty. The woman could face a charge for each animal recovered. Those charges could be upgraded to felony charges.

Deputies said this is one of the worst cases they've seen. Most of the animals have been taken to Tent City. Wildlife experts were being called in to handle the zebras.

ABC15 is not identifying the woman because she has not been formally charged. (Update: She has been charged with 80 counts of cruelty to animals and identified as Andrea Mikkel)
