Two dead puppies lead to YPD internal investigation

CALIFORNIA -- The Yreka Police Department is performing an internal investigation after two nine-week-old puppies were put down by the animal control officer on Wednesday.

Jeff O'Neill, owner of the one of the puppies, said he filed a missing animal report Wednesday evening after realizing the dogs were missing. O'Neill told the Siskiyou Daily News that he was never contacted by Animal Control Officer Dennis Moser.

O'Neill said he then went to the police department Thursday, only to learn that both of the puppies had been put down.

"I am very outraged with this scenario, being that these two lab puppies were only 9 weeks old," O'Neill said. "I filed a report with them last night about two missing puppies and they didn't say anything about finding my or my friend's puppy."

O'Neill said Moser told him the puppies were put down due to blood in one of the dog's stool.

“He couldn't give a description of what they looked like, and I asked which dog had blood and he couldn't tell me,” said O'Neill.

YPD confirmed Thursday that two puppies were given to Yreka Animal Control and shortly thereafter killed by the animal control officer.

“I'm taking this action seriously, and we will get to the bottom of it,” said Police Chief Brian Bowles.

Bowles said Siskiyou County District Attorney Kirk Andrus was asked to investigate any criminal misconduct in the case, and that an internal investigation will be conducted. Bowles also said that Moser has been placed on paid administrative leave.

“My best friend is gone because of this officer, and this animal cruelty needs to stop,” said O'Neill.
