Young boy recovering from dog attack

TENNESSEE  -- It's every parent's worst nightmare. A stray dog that seemed friendly suddenly attacked a four-year-old boy. The bites severely damaged his face.

Now Jeremiah Reed is back to his old self, playing with toys and reading to his mom. If it wasn't for the scar across his face, you wouldn't know he just survived a vicious dog attack.

"He's a strong little booger and the first thing he said is where's  my booboo, he wanted his little two-year-old little brother," said mother Rebecca Reed.

The dog was a stray his family caught and tied up, intending to bring to the shelter. A loud noise scared the dog and Jeremiah was just too close.

"[It] grabbed a hold of his face, the dog did, and just threw him down on the ground and it was like that, a split second," said Reed.

Jeremiah's dad and grandfather grabbed the dog off him, but his cheek was already badly torn. He was in surgery at Niswonger Children's Hospital all evening.  The doctors say his eye, nasal cavity, and facial muscle will be fine.

His mom said he handled it better than anyone.

"He just kept saying, mommy, daddy, why did that dog do that to me, you know? And how do you answer that, you know?  He got scared, it's something that happened," said Reed.

The dog was taken to the SBK Animal Center. He'll be kept in quarantine until they're sure he doesn't have rabies.

"He seems very friendly, his tail wags when I try to pet him, he let me and he just licked me," said Becky Birdwell.  She says there's a big problem with people just abandoning unwanted dogs instead of bringing them into shelters where they can be safe and cared for.

And the Reeds have dogs and remain avid animal lovers, but not without caution.

"If it's a stray dog beware and keep your eyes open because you never know. Anything, split second like that, and he could have been gone, not with us today," said Reed.
