Animals, couple rescued from filthy Mason County home

WASHINGTON -- Sixteen animals were taken to the Thurston County animal shelter just after midnight Sunday.

Their hair is still matted. They are still dirty. And according to the people at the shelter, the animals they got are the ones who are pretty well off.

Kennel tech Ananda Boylan held the dog who is the worst off.

"His eyes are both damaged so severely, he is blind and they will both need to be removed," said Boylan. "The damage is irreversible .  His ears are so severely damaged that he's deaf."

The animals lived on the sprawling property belonging to Thomas Thornsberry and Judy Thornsberry, a couple in their 60s.

Chopper 7 gives the best view  of the house on East Blackhawk Court in Belfair. According to Mason County sheriff's deputies, a friend called 911 yesterday when the couple didn't answer the door.

Deputies went inside, and found them too sick to help themselves; and their animals living in filth.

"A lot of animals," said Deputy William Adam, Mason County Sheriffsheriff's spokesman. "Thirty to 40 Pekingese puppies.  They found some cats. They found some snakes. They found some parakeet birds."

Some of the dogs were dead. The deputies took precautions.

"They had to put on Tyvek hazmat suits," he said. "That's how bad it was."

The deputies cleaned up the house and fed some 20 dogs that were well enough to stay behind. The others were farmed out to shelters in Kitsap and Thurston counties.

Boylan looked at one of two cockatoos who were also rescued.

"His nails and feet are completely bent sideways," she said.

What happened to the animals, she added, was preventable.

"This could have been avoided by simple grooming," said Boylan. "They weren't cared for. And now they're damaged beyond repair."

Even as dirty as the animals are, they are still cute.

But they will probably stay in a facility until their owners go to court.

The Thornsberrys were being treated at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton.
