NORTH CAROLINA -- An eight-year-old who was seriously mauled by two pit bulls last week is expected to be in the ICU for at least the next month, according to the family.
Latrell Weatherspoon was attacked while riding his bicycle on Henderson Road last Wednesday afternoon. The child lives next door to the dogs, which were owned by Ashlee Nailon.
Onslow County deputies shot and killed one of the dogs, while the other dog was captured. Nailon was given two citations by animal control.
Latrell's family says the dogs removed flesh off his eyelids and side of his face, and he will have to have reconstructive surgery on one of his arms.
To help with hospital expenses, the Jacksonville Storm Football family has put together a web site to assist the family. So far, more than $2,000 has been raised.
