WISCONSIN -- A judge on Wednesday sentenced a La Crosse woman who broke into the Coulee Region Humane Society to steal back her cats to 18 months on probation.
Lee Ann Shore, 47, while on supervision cannot have contact with the humane society or own more than four cats as allowed by city ordinance and must comply with recommended counseling. She must also pay restitution to the organization and serve 80 hours of community service under the sentence imposed in La Crosse County Circuit Court.
Shore late May 25 or early May 26 shattered a window at the humane society to steal 15 cats, including eight seized from her apartment after authorities found them living in squalor, according to the complaint. Authorities later found all but three in a Holmen field.
Shore tried to rescue her cats from euthanasia, said her attorney, Vincent Rust, who asked for a sentence of time served. Shore asked to serve community service hours.
Shore pleaded guilty to criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and bail jumping, while five other charges were dismissed but considered by the judge at sentencing. Prosecutors recommended two years on probation.
Circuit Judge Todd Bjerke praised Shore’s respect for animals but told her there “are other things you can do besides damage and harass the humane society.”
