"My pit bull is attacking my kids!" the mother exclaimed on the call with Glendale dispatchers.
The attack happened Tuesday afternoon at a home on Vogel Avenue, while four children were at home with the dog unsupervised.
Police say the dog bit an 8-year-old boy and a 13-year-old neighbor who was visiting the house.
The mother, who was on her way home, can be heard on the call asking dispatchers how long it will take for help to arrive.
While the dispatcher transferred her to the fire department, the mother tried to end the call.
"I need to be on the phone with my kids," she said. "I’m too far from them and I can’t see them."
The 8-year-old was evacuated by medical helicopter with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, a Glendale police spokesperson said.
According to Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, the dog has a history of two prior attacks.
In 2013, the dog bit another child in its home. It also attacked a neighbor, although Lt. John Reynolds says that incident was minor.
Reynolds says MCACC documented both incidents but did not take further action.
"If the dog is confined to its owners property, inside its house, inside a fenced yard, it’s actually not violating any of the ordinances or statutes," Reynolds said. "There’s really nothing we can do. There’s nothing the police department can do."
Reynolds says they rely on members of the community to file a complaint to declare a dog vicious.
Ultimately, it's up to a judge to decide whether a dog is vicious and determine any corrective action.
MCACC does have the authority to file a vicious dog complaint as well. They did not do that after either of the prior incidents.
In both cases, the dog was quarantined and subsequently released to the owner's care.
So basically MCACC COULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING and chose to do NOTHING. This is why there are laws in place to protect us from ourselves - when we're being idiots and want to put a vicious dog back into our household - they should never have allowed this dog to go back home. Putting a "bad cop" tag onto this story for their failure to do their jobs.
And the mother needs to be charged for putting her children in danger.
On the heels of this attack, the family requested the dog be euthanized.
