INDIANA -- An Evansville couple was arrested Saturday after police said they kept their children and animals in a home without heat and water.
According to an Evansville Police Department arrest affidavit, a 6-month-old and an 18-month-old stayed in a home at 1930 Jeanette Ave. that measured 45 degrees when police arrived early Saturday.
According to police, the home has been without water since November and the gas heat was shut off two months ago. The electricity was turned on recently, but it was shut off for 30 days.
The newborn was found sleeping on a couch next to a running space heater.
Police report the home had feces and urine in it, with three malnourished dogs and a dead rabbit in an animal cage.
According to police, there was also little food in the home that wasn’t expired.
Police arrested Noel A. Hawkins, 20, and Nathan L. Hawkins, 24. They are both preliminarily charged with felony child neglect and animal cruelty.
