TEXAS -- Comanche ISD superintendent Rick Howard says two seniors at Comanche High School have been suspended from extracurricular activities after the district learned they were part of an investigation into the brutal killing of an emu last weekend.
"It's been a hard thing to deal with this week," Howard says.
He calls the whole thing disturbing and sad — reports that students from his high school may have played a role in the violent death of an emu in a rural area near Hasse.
Howard says sheriff's deputies showed up at the high school Wednesday to interview students about their possible involvement.
The Comanche County Sheriff's Office did not get back to News 8 about the investigation, but Howard says it's all anyone can talk about in the town of about 4,000. He says as far as he knows, there are no charges yet.
He says he is disappointed.
"This is an isolated incident," Howard says. "Totally disassociated from school and school events, happened out in the country on private property in the middle of the night."
The superintendent says if any students are charged, they could face additional punishment at the school. Until then, the district will simply continue to cooperate with authorities as they look into this brutal and bizarre crime.
