Syracuse man, Norge Rodriguez, charged with animal cruelty after leaving dog in subzero weather, court papers say

NEW YORK -- A Syracuse man has been charged with animal cruelty after he left an dog in subzero temperatures, court papers say.

Norge Rodriguez, 44, of 106 Second North St., was charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty for failing provide proper medical care on Feb. 3.

Police say Rodriguez left a black-and-white springer spaniel named Max outside in subzero temperatures for long periods of time.

Animal hospital staff told police that the weather and a lack of grooming had caused Max such severely matted hair that it was pulling the dog's skin, court papers say.

The mats formed because Rodriguez did not groom the dog, but leaving the dog out in freezing temperatures made the problem worse, the court paper say. According to the papers, hospital staff told the police the mats became wet and frozen.

The hospital staff at Veterinary Medical Center had to sedate the dog in order to remove the mats and avoid causing the dog extreme pain, police wrote in the court papers.

Rodriquez was released without being booked at the Onondaga County Justice Center, jail records show. His next court date is scheduled for March 11.
