Michelle Melcher charged with cruelty to animals when she neglected her horse so badly it eventually died

PENNSYLVANIA -- State police have filed charges against a Schuylkill County woman they said neglected her 20-year-old horse over a months-long period, leading to its death.

Michelle Melcher, 39, of Pine Grove, faces cruelty to animals and disorderly conduct charges after she failed to provide adequate food, water, veterinary care and shelter for the horse, according to state police in Jonestown.

Troopers said the woman neglected the animal - which she was boarding from April 2 through Nov. 27, 2014, in the 100 block of Fisher Avenue in the borough - to the point it became emaciated and eventually died from the lack of care.

The Humane Society received multiple complaints about the condition of the horse and shelter he was kept in, but Melcher did not comply with the organization's requests for the horse's care, according to state police.

Online court records show Melcher is expected to appear in court on March 19 for a preliminary hearing.
