MISSOURI -- An 18-year-old man on Monday pleaded guilty to felony animal abuse for shooting a dog with a crossbow at a north-central Columbia trailer park in September.
Kaine G. Kitchen faces as much as four years in prison when he is sentenced March 30. Boone County Circuit Judge Christine Carpenter ordered a sentencing assessment report.
A witness saw Kitchen shoot an adult beagle mix with a crossbow at Rustic Meadows Trailer Park about 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14, according to a probable cause statement. Another person told a police officer that she did not see what happened, but heard the injured dog yelping and saw it running away. Kitchen told the second witness he shot the beagle mix because it was in the trash and “nobody wanted it anyway,” the statement said.
Kitchen was arrested Oct. 31 and has been in the Boone County Jail since. His attorney, public defender Jenean Thompson, asked for Kitchen to be released on his own recognizance as he awaits sentencing. Carpenter ordered a bond investigation for Kitchen, whose bond is set at $10,000.
At his plea hearing, Kitchen admitted to harming the dog on purpose. When Carpenter asked how Kitchen hurt the animal, he said, “I shot it with a crossbow.”
Thompson told Carpenter that Kitchen hopes to re-enroll at Battle High School, where he had to drop classes because of his incarceration.
The dog, named Winnie, was taken to the animal shelter and then to the University of Missouri veterinary clinic. Its injuries were not life-threatening. According to the statement, a vet determined Winnie suffered a deep laceration to the shoulder.
