ARIZONA -- A trial has been cancelled and there is new talk of a plea agreement for Joseph Kennedy, the alleged Cornville puppy dumper.
Public defender Terry Hance told Yavapai County Superior Court Judge Michael Bluff during a pre-trial conference Monday that his client recently had further psychological workup and has completed a 90-day sober-living certification for alcohol, narcotics, crystal meth and cocaine from the Freedom Recovery House.
Deputy Yavapai County Attorney Henry Whitmer interjected that he would support a plea as long as the stipulations include a prison mandatory sentence.
Judge Bluff scheduled a new appearance for March 23 for a possible plea. He vacated the trial set for March 17.
Kennedy, 28, is charged with two counts of animal cruelty, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest. Kennedy was granted a third-party release to his mother's custody.
The charges against him came about after a Cornville woman was driving behind the vehicle from which the puppy allegedly was tossed June 11.
She rescued the puppy, and then called the Sheriff's Office. Officers identified the man and arrested Kennedy June 16. Kennedy was reported to have thrown a second puppy over a fence after the car incident.
