Animal-cruelty suspect, Curtis Johnson, near Winter Park kicked, beat dogs, deputies say

FLORIDA -- Deputies say they have cellphone video of an 18-year-old Winter Park-area man abusing a small dog at his home Saturday.

A neighbor called deputies Saturday morning after he said he saw Curtis L. Johnson kick and smack a small dog that was on the porch outside his apartment on the 2900 block of Summer Wind Drive, according to an Orange County Sheriff's Office arrest report.

The neighbor told deputies he heard a dog yelping and looked to see Johnson throw a cage at the small dog.

He said he then saw Johnson kick the dog against a wall and stomp on its back, according to the arrest report.

While on the phone with the Sheriff's Office, the neighbor said Johnson got a broomstick and started hitting a larger dog, the arrest report states.

When deputies arrived, the neighbor gave them two videos of the incident. Deputies then found the smaller dog caged without food or water, and the larger dog emaciated with sores, the arrest report states.

Deputies said Johnson acknowledged owning the dogs and that he planned to feed them, but hadn't had a chance yet. He denied abusing them, the report states.

Orange County Animal Services took the dogs to be evaluated.

Johnson is facing misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and confining animals without sufficient food or water, according to the Sheriff's Office.

He was released from jail Saturday on $600 bail.
