ARIZONA -- Animal control officers Tuesday found a 14-year-old Rottweiler abandoned inside the garage of a Florence home previously cited for poor dog housing conditions.
Neighbors tipped off officers about a dog locked inside of a garage with no food or water and laying in its own excrement, a press release said.
Previous calls corresponding to the same home in 2014 alerted officers about a dog confined to a small patio with trash and piles of dog excrement. The owner was cited in September for no license and excessive feces, the release said. The owner failed to attend the hearing and was subsequently fined $600.
According to the release, the owner refused to surrender the dog to Pinal County during numerous visits by officers.
Prior to Tuesday's call, officials believed the owner had complied with their instructions.
"The neighbors had told us the owner moved the dog to the garage," Interim Animal Care and Control Director Audra Michael said in a statement. "They added that they had not seen the owner for weeks. When the neighbors texted the owner, the reply was that the door was open and they were more than welcome to enter the home and feed and water the dogs. Which they did."
According to the release, the property manager told officers the resident was evicted and had until April 12 to relocate.
Officers found the dog in the back of the garage without any food or water. The dog was taken to a veterinarian's office where it is recovering from dehydration and pain in the hind legs, the release said.
A forfeiture hearing will take place on Friday, April 17.
