Family returns from vacation to disturbing discovery

OHIO -- Authorities are investigating a gruesome discovery: a box of dead kittens left in a Lorain County driveway.

On April 11, Kathy Meade came home from vacation with her husband to find four kittens shot dead in her Dunton Road driveway in Sheffield Township.

"I just gasped, 'cause I could see a very prevalent hole in the back of the kitten's head. As we picked each one up, it was obvious that each one had been shot in the head," explains Meade.

The kittens were dropped off in a box. Meade believes the mother cat tried to pull them to safety because some were found near their car, others near the box.

"She knew something was terribly wrong. I think because of the position of the kittens. I think she took them out of the box. She kept going over and smelling them. Just looking around. Didn't know what to do with her kittens," says Meade.

At first Meade and her husband left food and water for the cat, but now a neighbor is taking care of her. A local vet has offered free services for the mother cat.

Lorain County sheriff's deputies are investigating the case of animal cruelty. Deputies are going door to door talking to neighbors to try to find out who may be behind the troubling crime.

Meade even posted the incident on her Facebook page, hoping someone would recognize the cat and the owner could be found.

"I don't know why they didn't drop them off here alive, at least if they didn't want them. If they are caught, to be prosecuted to the extent of the law," Meade says.
