Girl, 3, recovering after dog attack in Edmonton playground

CANADA -- The three-year-old girl bitten by a dog at an Edmonton playground is continuing to recover at home.

Maryam Abdelwahab required stitches to her lip and eye, and plastic surgery as a result of the attack Sunday in Mill Woods.

She also lost a tooth as a result of the attack.

"From time to time she is still saying, 'I feel pain, the dog bite me,'" said her father Ahmed Abdelwahab.

Abdelwahab said Maryam is expected to recover physically, but he fears she will be afraid of dogs even after the wounds on his daughter's face heal.

"Everytime we walk in the streets or if I take her in the car she feels uncomfortable when she sees a dog," he said.

Abdelwahab said Maryam was bit as she and the other children were leaving the playground.

The city of Edmonton's animal control office is investigating the attack.

Last year in Edmonton 536 dog attacks were reported, 303 of those on people.

The city's animal control office said 29 people either received stitches or hospital treatment because of a dog attack in 2014.
