VIRGINIA -- A brutal dog attack has a Henrico woman asking why, and police investigating.
It happened Wednesday night near Moody Middle School in the Lakeside community. A woman says she and her nine-pound dog were attacked by another dog running free in the neighborhood.
There's still blood on the road where the attack happened.
Witnesses say the attack was so brutal that the other dog pulled Mimi right out of her harness.
Pictures show a happier time, nearly eight years ago when Sandra Wainwright had just gotten Mimi.
Those are all she has left after a brutal attack.
Wednesday, members of Wainwright's church buried the little Yorkshire Terrier after the attack that injured Sandra and killed Mimi.
The Henrico woman said she was walking Mimi around 7:30 when she looked up and saw a pit bull behind her.
When she went to pick up her the little dog, she says the pit bull attacked her and Mimi. Eventually, that other dog carried Mimi off.
Neighbor Whitney Robertson, who's also a first responder, found Wainwright soon after.
"By the time I got there the dog had already gotten Mimi. And she (Sandra) was just in the road screaming and crying for people to help her," Robertson said.
Mimi was eventually found and taken to the emergency vet, but didn't make it. Sandra needed stitches to her ankle.
"It was just horrible. I couldn't sleep last night. I know she couldn't either," says Robertson.
A day later Henrico Animal Protection continues to investigate, but says the owner has turned the dog over to the county.
On a Lakeside neighborhood Facebook forum, a man with the same name as the dog's owner defended the dog saying it had never been violent before and had grown up around children and other small dogs.
But, that's little consolation to Wainwright, who says Mimi was a member of her family and like a child to her.
Henrico Police said no charges have been placed at this point, but they continue to investigate and are following up on the incident.
