NORTH CAROLINA -- A man charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with a dog attack turned himself into the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office on Friday.
Daniel Douglas McCollum, 55, of 1122 McCollum Road in Madison is the owner of a group of dogs accused in the death of Jose Cruz Cazares Robles. A grand jury issued an indictment Monday.
Robles, 62, was out for a walk on Nov. 23 and never came home. His body was found the next day at the bottom of an embankment on Bethany Road with dog bites and scratches.
The autopsy report said he died of a heart attack brought on by a dog attack.
“Bleeding and stress from a dog attack and resultant injuries most likely contributed to death,” the report read.
Robles had traveled from Mexico to visit with family.
About 15 hounds and Blue Heelers were seized from McCollum after the attack and taken to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter, where they remained as of Friday.
In 2013, the U.S. Postal Service asked McCollum to move his mailbox farther from his property because the dogs allegedly posed “a potential threat” to carriers. The dogs also allegedly confronted a sheriff’s deputy the day after Robles was reported missing.
Bail for McCollum was set at $100,000. He was released Friday and is set to appear in court June 1.
