Holly Gillette Accused of Abandoning Animals in Kentucky

KENTUCKY -- Nine dogs were found at a home chained up, hungry, and apparently abandoned.

Woody Maddix has been the animal control officer in Carter County since December. He says what he saw on Holly Lane in Grayson is the worst thing he's seen yet.

"It was one pitiful sight," Maddix said, "pretty disgusting really."

He checked out the home after getting a complaint. Along with the chained up dogs were several cats.

Carter County Animal Warden Woody Maddix
untangled an abandoned dog near Grayson last
week. Nine dogs and one cat were taken from a
home on Holly Lane and their owner
is being charged with animal cruelty.
"Some of the animals didn't have collars on," he said. "There were just chains wrapped around their neck, and they were all twisted and wadded up till they couldn't even got to their shelters. They only had a few inches to move."

The Carter County Sheriff's Department says there's a warrant for the woman who lived here, Holly Gillette, who could face 10 counts of animal cruelty.

"We just want her to turn herself in so we can get the situation resolved," Maddix said.

Neighbors say she moved out a couple months ago.

One woman who lives nearby who didn't want to be identified says she tried to help make sure the animals didn't starve.

"I would just throw the rest of my leftovers over the hill into their cages and stuff because they didn't have anything, no water, no food," the neighbor said. "They just looked sad and miserable."

The pets were taken to an animal shelter in Rowan County. Several animal rescue groups are working on finding homes for those dogs.
