Toledo couple sentenced for incident that left relative riddled with dog bites

OHIO -- A west Toledo couple found guilty on charges of assault and endangerment, after the husband's mentally-disabled sister was discovered in a pool of blood inside their home last fall, has been sentenced.

Norman and Susan Demski were sentenced in Lucas County Common Pleas Court Friday morning by Judge Gene Zmuda. Each must perform 100 hours of community service and have no contact with the victim, Mr. Demski's sister.

Both entered Alford pleas in April.

Mr. Demski has been placed on probation for a year on a patient endangerment charge. Mrs. Demski will serve three years of community control for attempted assault. If she violates her community control, Mrs. Demski will be ordered to serve 11 months in prison.

The husband and wife were charged with patient endangerment and attempted assault back in September 2014 after Mr. Demski's sister, who is developmentally disabled, was found inside their roach-infested west Toledo home with numerous dog and human bites from head to toe.

A complaint stated that Mr. Demski, who is his sister's legal guardian, left his sister in the care of his wife, Susan, on Thursday, September 4. Susan then left her sister-in-law alone in the home for more than five hours.

Also inside the home were three roaming pit bulls, according to the complaint. The home's floors were covered in dog feces and roaches.

During the time she was alone in the home, the mentally-disabled woman was attacked by the dogs, resulting in two broken arms, deep wounds to both arms, and numerous dog bites from the bottom of her feet to top of her head.

While being treated at an area hospital, Mr. Demski's sister was found to have human bites on her thighs, buttocks, and shoulder. She is now being cared for by the state of Ohio.
