TENNESSEE -- An owner who’s dog attacked a Jefferson City police officer reached out to WATE 6 On Your Side wanting to know why he was cited for breaking the city’s ordinance on vicious dogs when his dog was on a tether during the time of the attack.
The attack, according to police reports, happened Monday when an officer was searching for a possible domestic dispute. Police said Doug Murray’s dog, who was on a zip-line leash, ran out and bit the officer knocking him to the ground. To get away the officer had to shoot, breaking the animal’s leg.
The officer is recovering and Murray’s dog, Tanker, came home from the hospital Thursday afternoon with a cast on his broken leg.
Days later, Murray says he’s relieved not mad. “I understand completely. The officer was defending himself but I think it could’ve been handled in a better manner,” he said. “He’s really a nice dog. You know when the officer had cited us for him being aggressive it’s like no he’s not, he was just approached wrong. But I don’t think he should be falsely cited for an aggressive dog when he’s really not.”
Police reports show the officer approached Murray’s shed, where Tanker was. The officer said he heard barking, but could not see the dog.
WATE 6 On Your Side asked Chief of Police Andy Dossett why Murray was cited. Dossett said it was because the guidelines on dog pen enclosures were broken. In order for Murray to keep his dog, the new dog pen will be checked and we’ve learned Tanker is up to date on all of its vaccines.
As Tanker gets better, Murray is fixing a shed to meet the city’s guidelines. “Hopefully everything will get dropped and we can put this all behind us,” he said.
