Madison man charged with manslaughter in dog attack that led to death

NORTH CAROLINA -- A grand jury has indicted a man on a manslaughter charge after an autopsy concluded a dog attack led to a man's death in November.

Daniel McCollum of Madison was indicted Monday on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of Jose Cruz Casares Robles, Rockingham County prosecutors said.

Robles, 62, of Mexico, was found dead Nov. 24 at the bottom of a steep embankment on McCollum Road east of Madison. Robles was found with wounds consistent with dog bites, Rockingham County deputies said.

Autopsy results that deputies released March 24 determined Robles died from a heart attack "in the setting of a dog attack" and underlying heart-related conditions.

Robles was reported missing the day before being found dead. He didn't return from a walk while visiting family on nearby Bethany Road, deputies said.

An investigation led deputies to take 15 dogs from McCollum's home on McCollum Road to the Rockingham County Animal Shelter. Deputies said March 24 that the dogs were still being taken care of at the shelter.
