Arkansas mechanic jailed on manslaughter charge after pack of pit bulls mauled man

ARKANSAS -- A mechanic has been arrested after authorities say his pack of pit bull dogs mauled a man to death in central Arkansas.

Sixty-two-year-old John Chester Smith of Pine Bluff has been charged with manslaughter and is being held Friday at the Jefferson County Jail.

The county prosecutor charged Smith in the March death of 36-year-old De'Trick Omar Johnson of Pine Bluff.

Authorities say Johnson was approaching Smith's business when the dogs rushed under a fence and attacked him. Smith wasn't present at the time. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

The county sheriff's office said Smith had been warned about the dogs in the past because of their aggressive behavior.

It was not clear how many dogs were involved in the attack.
