FLORIDA -- Fifty five-year-old Benaine Quinn was dropping off her daughter, 29-year-old Cynthia Quinn back at her home in Callaway Thursday evening when a Pit bull attacked her, biting her on the neck, leg, and arm.
The Pit bull belongs to Cynthia's roommate.
According to authorities, Cynthia attempted to pull the dog away from her mother, the dog then bit her on the hand. Cynthia managed to get inside of her home and her mother found cover.
Ruth Corley, the Bay County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer said, "the victim had managed to crawl back into her car and was keeping herself safe from the dog."
Once on scene, a Bay County Deputy found himself also in harms way. "The dog came at him, it was about a 60 pound pit bull and it did bite him on the leg," said Corley.
The deputy and Cynthia are okay.
Benaine Quinn was taken to Bay Medical Center Sacred Heart where she underwent surgery.
Bay County Animal Control removed the dog from the home.
Kathy Beatson, the Division Manager of Bay County Animal Control said, "he was calm in the vehicle but when you put your hand up and said hey good dog he would start growling at you," said Beatson. "So we just don't take chances because you just never know."
Cecilia Hagan, the owner of the Pit bull was cited by authorities for not having her dog chained.
According to authorities, the woman only had the dog for three weeks, and it wasn't the first time it bit someone.
"If you do know its bitten someone or been very protective and demonstrated some level of aggression before, you take special precautions to keep that dog in a fenced in area," said Corley.
Beatson said, "we had the owner sign the dog over to us for euthanization and then we contacted the health department who determined we would go ahead and ship the animal for rabies testing rather than wait 10 days like we normally would."
The Bay County Sheriff's Deputy received medical attention, authorities say he is okay.
The medical status of Benaine Quinn is still unknown.
