OKLAHOMA -- A southwest Oklahoma City mom is charged with one count of animal cruelty following an investigation by the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division.
"We did take them from a situation that was pretty difficult for them to survive in," said Animal Welfare Superintendent Julie Bank. "Who knows what could have happened if we didn't come in and rescue them? Their life is starting right now."
According to investigators, three animals were rescued from a home in the 1200 block of Southwest 62nd Street.
The city first began its investigation after neighbors called officials, saying they were concerned for the animals' safety.
After a number of unsuccessful attempt to reach the homeowner, Maribel Chairez, a court order was issued to seize the animals.
Upon removal of the animals, investigators discovered the carcass of a dog chained to workbench in a 12x12 shed in the backyard.
According to court documents, there was no sign of food or water bowls. There were signs the animal tried to escape but was unsuccessful.
It's estimated the dog had been in there for at least two months.
"This is all a misunderstanding with my neighbors," Chairez said.
She went on to say she has rectified the situation.
Animal Welfare said she turned over custody of the surviving animals to the city.
"Our first goal was to check the animals out medically and make sure they were okay," said Bank.
"We thought that they were pretty much underweight, so the goal now is to monitor their medical needs and fatten them up."
Animal Welfare said the dogs will be up for adoption once they are healthy and have been socialized.
As for Chairez, while she has been charged with one count of animal cruelty, she has not been arrested.
