Oregon: Horse Freed from Oregon Creek Bed

OREGON -- Fire officials in the Portland suburb of Lake Oswego say their successful rescue of a horse that fell and got trapped in a creek bed was aided by the 10-year-old animal's calm demeanor.

Fire Marshal Gert Zoutendijk says the owner of the horse named Major called for help after an accident late Wednesday afternoon as he rode the horse on the Iron Mountain Trail.

Major fell and ended up trapped in a creek bed, with his legs wedged against the bank in such a way that he was unable to rise.

Firefighters used a rope and pulley system to help pull the horse free.

Eventually, Major was able to get up by himself. Battalion Chief Dave Morris says the 1,000-pound horse suffered only a small scrape on a back leg.
