James Sharper faces animal cruelty charge after video of horse whipping

FLORIDA -- An Okeechobee man was arrested Friday and faces animal cruelty charges after a video surfaced of a horse whipping.

Authorities with the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office said they only found the video, because the suspect, James Sharper, told them about it.

Deputies said the video showed a man whipping a horse at Prairie Trail Riders. They said they've identified the man in the video as Sharpe, the owner of Prairie Trail Riders.

Deputies said Sharpe called them to tell them about the video, saying they shouldn't believe other people who claimed the man in the video was him.

Investigators said once they closely watched at the video, it was obvious Sharpe was the man who was seen whipping the horse.

Sharpe was arrested and charged with 11 counts of animal cruelty, eight of the charges are felonies.

Deputies said Sharpe had 11 horses at the farm, and all of them were malnourished.

Animal Care and Control took custody of the horses.
