Natrona County authorities say man injured horse by dragging it with his pickup

WYOMING -- Authorities charged a Natrona County man with animal cruelty on Monday after he allegedly used a dog chain to drag his horse down a road, causing the horse to bleed, according to an incident report from the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office.

Dennis Good told deputies he attached a dog chain to his pickup and haltered it to his mare to lead the horse down the road. Good said he was taking the mare to a neighbor’s house in order to separate the horse from its newborn colt because the horse was acting aggressive. The neighbor called authorities when she realized the mare had been injured.

Good lives on Bates Creek Lane south of Casper, according to the report.

Deputies inspected the mare and found it had swelling to both sides of its neck, the report states. The bridge of mare’s nose was red with blood, as was the underside of its jaw. The mare’s rear legs were also bleeding.

“When the mare walked, she was noticeably sore in her back legs,” the report states. “The mare walked as if she walked on egg shells.”

Investigators found dried blood on the chain and lead rope.

Evidence on the ground showed that the horse was drug for 214 feet, and the drag marks were consistent with a horse planting its feet in the ground, while something pulled the horse forward.

Good stated that when that happened, he would immediately stop his truck and did not drag the horse, but said “sometimes a person has to do what a person has to do to get the job done.”

Several pools of blood were found along the trial and various injuries were also found on the horse, particularly from the hind legs.
Metro Animal Control took the mare and the colt to the Natrona County Fairgrounds.

Animal cruelty is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to $750. The citation requires Good to appear for a hearing May 15 in Natrona County Circuit Court.
