INDIANA -- A Fort Wayne Police Officer shot a pit bull that was charging at him Tuesday morning.
The pit bull was shot in the 4500 block of Winter St, on the southeast side of the city around 8:30 a.m.
An Animal Care and Control officer was called to the area after two pit bulls allegedly got aggressive with residents and possibly school children waiting to get on the bus.
When the officer called for backup, one of the dogs reportedly charged a police officer, who shot one of them.
"The black male dog had done a full frontal charge with hackles up, tail aroused. There wasn't any stopping him," said Amy Joe Seitz of Animal Care and Control. " All the officers tried to yell 'stop,' and unfortunately had to discharge their firearm."
The wounded pit bull is being evaluated to see whether it should be euthanized. The other pit bull was taken in by Animal Care and Control.
