ARIZONA -- A 31-year-old man has been arrested after a dog he was caring for died while being kept in a wire cage in the sun.
According to court documents, the Arizona Humane Society responded to the North Phoenix home of Matthew Adam McQuirter around 7 p.m. on May 9 after receiving an anonymous complaint.
The Humane Society told police that McQuirter met them at the door and led them to the back yard where they found a 1-year-old female pug obviously deceased in a wire cage.
The cage and dog were in direct sunlight with no water or food in sight, according to the documents.
McQuirter told officers that he was taking care of the dog which belonged to his brother who had just died. He reportedly said he was watching the dog until his brother’s girlfriend could come get it.
Police said McQuirter told them he last fed and gave water to the dog at lunch time and when he came home the dog was dead. He said he had no idea why the dog died.
McQuirter didn’t even know the sex of the dog, which he had been caring for from six to eight weeks, authorities said. There was another dog at the residence which was not in a cage and was left at the scene.
Authorities said McQuirter “did not seem upset or concerned in the least” that the pug “suffered a horrific, painful death.”
A veterinarian reported the dog died from dehydration with being left out in the sunlight as a contributing factor, according to the documents.
McQuirter was arrested for one count of animal cruelty. Police said he also had numerous warrants.
