Police stop vicious American Bulldog attack in Hunterdon

NEW JERSEY -- Authorities are trying to determine whether charges should be filed against the owner of an American Bulldog who attacked a 57-year-old Colorado woman Wednesday evening at a Ramsey Road residence.

The woman was attacked after she tried to intervene when the dog attacked her 82-year-old mother-in-law, police said.

The attack on the Colorado woman ended only when Patrolman Harry Bugal grabbed the dog by its throat and spinal area as it was latched onto the woman’s upper left leg as she was lying face down on the front porch of the home, police say.

Police were called to the home at about 5:35 p.m. Wednesday after several neighbors reported a woman screaming for help and an out-of-control dog mauling a woman.

When Bugal arrived, he saw the woman, who was bleeding heavily, lying face down on the porch with the dog attacking her.

After the patrolman grabbed the dog and it released its grip on the woman, she walked into the front yard and collapsed, police say.

Though Bugal kept a grip on the dog, it continued to growl and thrash in an attempt to attack him.

A neighbor came to the officer’s aid by dialing 911 and holding a cellphone to Bugal’s mouth so he could request additional officers to the scene. The neighbor used a cane to help pin down the dog.

Sgt. Corey Kubinak of the Town of Clinton Police Department arrived with an animal snare pole and captured the dog’s head in the snare. That allowed Bugal to let go of the dog.

The Clinton Rescue Squad treated the woman, who had multiple bites to both arms, her chest and leg, police said.

Bugal, who suffered scrapes and cuts to his arm, learned that the dog had been rescued about a year year ago and had been involved in two prior bite attacks, police say.

Clinton Township Animal Control Officer Nate Barson responded, took custody of the dog and will be determining if any charges are warranted against the owner of the dog, who was not present.
