Stray little dog attacked by kids in Middletown neighborhood

OHIO -- A stray dog is recovering after witnesses said she was kicked and attacked by a group of children in Middletown.

The Maltese-poodle mix, who rescuers have named Holly, is in the care of volunteers from Middletown rescue shelter Joseph's Legacy.

Volunteers with Joseph's Legacy told WLWT News 5 a 911 caller reported the dog was being kicked by several juveniles.

A Middletown police officer responded and found Holly Monday night near the intersection of North University Boulevard and Central Avenue.

Witnesses told the officer children had kicked her, but the witnesses did not know the children's identities.

Joseph's Legacy was able to get Holly to MedVet in Dayton and volunteer Molly White picked her up Tuesday morning for treatment in Middletown at All About Pet Care.

"She was just helpless and I was holding her limp little body and she was trembling, breathing really fast and she was not in good shape," White said.

Dr. Matthew Heller said Holly shows signs of a traumatic brain injury and could take weeks to fully recover.

"She did have two seizures last night at MedVet, her general weakness, her inability to use her legs, when she does walk she circles a little bit to the right," Heller said. "Holly is very stable and with any neurologic injury you have to have patience, let the brain recover slow.”

WLWT was told Holly was released from the vet Wednesday.

Who could abuse this little dog?

Joseph's Legacy volunteer Krista Snyder will care for Holly while the group searches to find her a permanent home.

"If you foster a pet, you save a life. You keep that animal out of the shelter, you keep it off the streets, you are the in between their hard time and their forever home," Snyder said.

The shelter is raising money for her medical bills on YouCaring. Click here for Holly's page.
