Couple And Pet Survive Dog Attack, Want Pit bull-Mix Punished

TEXAS -- A simple walk ended in bloodshed and tears for a couple after their neighbor’s dog attacked them.

“I was just so surprised this animal could knock me to ground just like that,” said Ronald Rode about the pit bull-mix that bit him.

The vicious attack happened in a quiet Preston Hollow neighborhood.

Rode was not only knocked to the ground and bitten — but so was his little Jack Russell terrier named Shea.

“It’s amazing it could do that in one bite,” said Rode.

Rode and his wife were walking Shea when the pit bull-mix jumped on them – biting both Ronald in the arm and Shea on the upper torso.

“It was awful… the look on her little face and not knowing how it was going to turn out, it was terrifying,” said Kellie Rode.

Neighbors helped scare the pit bull-mix off before police, fire rescue and animal control arrived. But authorities didn’t quarantine the aggressive pit bull-mix.

“In my head, I just assumed once a dog bit a person, it would go to animal control,” said Rode.
A couple days later, owners of the attack dog took it to their vet; where it remains in quarantine for 10 days.

Dallas Animal Care and Control said it’s allowed since this was the animals first reported incident and it’s current on its vaccines.

“I just feel very disappointed because in nine days they can pick up that dog and take it back to their house. And it’ll be there at their house until it does it again,” said Rode.

The owners of the pit bull-mix wouldn’t speak to CBS 11 News on-camera but said they were recently broken into and their fence was damaged.

Kellie and Ronald rode said they were able to fend off the dog but others may not be so fortunate.
“I really expect the owner to do the right thing and get rid of that dog.”

Animal Control said at this point the only recourse the couple has in this situation is to file a “dangerous dog petition” with the city’s code department.
