A Louisville Post office representative said the letter carrier was delivering mail in the Portland neighborhood Monday morning, when a pit bull attacked him from behind.
The man suffered bites to his legs and face and lost feeling in part of his hand.
“We had 40 bites. This year so far, we've had 22. So you know we're on our way to being a top dog bite city once again,” said David Walton, a UPS spokesman.
Walton said mail carriers are trained in what to do during a dog attack.
However, he said dog owners can provide the most protection by making sure their dogs are inside while the mail is delivered.
“They should be aware of what time their carrier comes to their house and make sure the dogs are put up,” said Walton.
Walton said last year, Louisville ranked number six in the nation for the most dog bites to mail carriers.
Monday’s attack brings Louisville up to 22 bites so far in 2015.
“Everybody pray for Brother Bruce. He is a wonderful man, and that's the truth,” said Bonnie Vincent, friend of mailman.
Neighbors said the mailman is also a deacon at Shawnee Baptist Church.
