WYOMING -- A Laramie woman who allegedly smothered two cats pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness Thursday in District Court.
Ruth Ann Henson, 52, was charged with two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. Each count carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
Defense Attorney Randy Hiller said the Wyoming State Hospital in Evanston evaluated Hanson and determined she was competent to be out in the community.
Henson’s bond was set at $10,000 signature. District Court Judge Jeffrey Donnell said the bond could be revisited after a hearing to determine if one of Henson’s siblings can look after her.
A trial date has not been set.
According to a Laramie Police Department affidavit, an officer was dispatched Dec. 31 to a Ninth Street residence following a report of animal cruelty and property destruction. A woman told the officer her mother, Henson, had thrown her belongings into the alley and she did not know where her cats were.
The bodies of two cats were discovered in a pile of trash and belongings dumped at the edge of the alley.
Each animal’s front and back legs were duct taped together, and its head and neck were covered with black plastic secured with duct tape. The cats appeared to have died from suffocation, the affidavit stated.
The officer asked Henson about the cats through the front door, which she would not initially open, and Henson said, “I had to put them to sleep” and would not explain further, according to the affidavit.
