NORTH CAROLINA -- A Greenville man charged with shooting and killing a family’s dog over a parking space in 2014 has been convicted of felony animal cruelty.
Devon Smith will serve 10 to 21 months after investigators say he shot a dog twice with a pistol after he tried to park in a space in the Sterling Point complex last year.
The female boxer mix named Asia died shortly after she was shot. Greenville Animal Protective Services Director Tim Langley says this decision was historic.
“It means a great deal to this unit and to this police department,” says Langley. “We will not tolerate things like this in this city. It brings closure to the victims in the case who were traumatized.”
Witnesses on the scene say Smith shot the dog in front of children that were playing with it in the development. According to testimony, Asia was never aggressive, even after she had been shot.
