Highland boy hospitalized after German Shepherd bite to face

MICHIGAN -- A 5-year-old Highland Township boy was hospitalized Saturday after he was bitten in the face by a German shepherd.

According to a report, deputies, along with the Highland Township Fire Department were dispatched to the area of Milford and Wardlow roads just before 8:30 p.m. after the boy's mother called to report her son had been bitten by a dog in the 4600 block of Strathcona Drive.

The mother was reportedly attempting to transport the child to the hospital in her own car, but called 9-1-1 because the bleeding was getting worse.

The child was transported by Star EMS to McLaren Hospital - Oakland for treatment of his injuries.

No update was immediately available on the extent of they boy's injuries or his current condition, but Joanie Toole, chief of the Oakland County Animal Control Division, confirmed the boy sustained bite wounds to the face.

The 7-year-old animal is currently in the custody of animal control, where it will remain for the required 10-day rabies watch.

"The owner has signed off to relinquish the animal and asked that the animal be euthanized after the 10 days," Toole said, noting that because the owners have surrendered the animal, no charges will be sought.
