Louisiana Animal Control Officer, Kevin Myrick, admitted to killing a dog with machete

LOUISIANA -- Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi reports that Kevin R. Myrick, DOB 4/9/69, of 20465 Sidney Rose in Grosse Tete was arrested for cruelty to animals after reportedly using a machete on a stray dog.

On July 5, 2015, Myrick, a former Animal Control Officer with the Iberville Parish Council, responded to a call out to pick up a lone dog near the intersection of Hwy 405 and St. Louis Road.

Rather than collecting the stray dog and bringing it to animal control, Myrick struck the animal in the back of the head with a machete and left its remains on the side of the road.

According to the report, Myrick later admitted to using the machete on the dog and that all of the cases that Myrick investigated are under review to ensure he handled them correctly.

“As soon as this was brought to our attention, the employee was terminated immediately,” Laure Doiron, Director of Iberville Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness said, according to a WBRZ report.

“When our officers arrive on scene and an animal is in distress, they are to gather the animal and bring it to a shelter,” Doiron said.  “We have contacts with local veterinarians.  They are to be called immediately to assess, to determine what should be done with the animal.”

Myrick had only worked for Iberville Animal Control for less than a year, according to a report, and is being held without bond and could face more charges.
