MINNESOTA -- A puppy is dead and a man is in jail today after a dog attack Saturday night.
The incident began when Olmsted County Sheriff's deputies met a 40-year-old woman at an emergency veterinarian clinic at 8:40 p.m.
She told officers that about 40 minutes earlier, she and other family members were playing with their 8-week-old English springer spaniel outside their apartment at 3800 U.S. Hwy. 14 Southeast.
According to the report, an adult female pit bull - mastiff mixed breed dog came out of a nearby apartment and attacked the puppy.
Deputies contacted the adult dog's owner, whom Capt. Scott Behrns described as "hostile, aggressive and uncooperative." The 44-year-old man was cited at the scene for having a dog at large; at that point, the puppy was still alive.
The spaniel died about 1 a.m., officials learned.
About 9:45 a.m. Sunday, deputies were called back to the same address by the same woman, who said the dog's owner had just confronted her.
The man allegedly told the woman, "If you touch my dog, I'll kill you," then continued with threats to kill the victim's husband and "beat her son to a pulp and kill him," Behrns said.
The man refused to cooperate when deputies went to his door, the report said. They waited outside his home until he came out at 12:50 p.m., when he was taken into custody on suspicion of felony terroristic threats.
The Post-Bulletin typically doesn't identify suspects until they've been charged.
Any further action concerning the mixed-breed dog is in the hands of Marion Township officials.
