MASSACHUSETTS -- The pit bull that's been held at the town's animal shelter since July 12 after it bit a police officer will be released to her owner Wednesday, Police Chief Scott Livingstone said in an email.
"The owner has found residence in the town of Belchertown," he wrote.
"The release comes with several stipulations that if violated , will result in additional punitive actions and a potential hearing before our select board," he wrote in the statement.
Amherst police have not identified the owner but Ludlow police, who had an encounter with the dog, said she belonged to 37-year-old Holyoke resident Darbie Young.
The dog bit an officer there during a traffic stop. That officer did not require treatment but the Amherst officer did.
The dog, which was not leashed, attacked the Amherst police officer July 12 as he was checking on an unconscious woman on a bench. The woman was identified as the owner but not by name.
The dog was found to be up to date on its rabies vaccine, according to police.

I wonder how happy Belchertown police are with their colleagues in Amherst and Ludlow, passing this police-biting mauler on to their turf.
