Dog attack victim's family waiting for animal ordinance change

ARKANSAS -- For months, Jefferson County has been plagued by multiple pit bull attacks.

THV11 sat down with Public Safety Chair Ted Harden in April of this year, when he guaranteed the quorum court would change the county's vicious animal ordinance. On Thursday he said, "I've been very concerned about this."

Now 106 days since that interview, no change has been implemented to the twenty-year-old law.

John Smith says, "They've been saying a lot and nothing has actually been put in place." John Smith's best friend De'Trick Johnson was the victim of a deadly pit bull attack at CJ's Garage in March. That attack is what prompted THV11 to look into the details surrounding the ordinance.

Several months later, Smith is still not pleased with what the county is doing to change the faulty ordinance. He says, "I'm not going to allow it to go down like that."

When I brought Smith's concerns to Harden, he told me the county has been delayed. The county is facing many pressing matters like their budget and jail riots, but behind closed doors Harden says the county is working diligently on changing the ordinance. They just want to make sure it's done right and has the best chance at being approved.

Harden says, "I certainly feel like this is a priority that we certainly needed to address there was just some opposition to putting it on the books, on the agenda for this month."
