Pennsylvania: Scott Deater, 24, charged with animal cruelty for killing girlfriend's cat

PENNSYLVANIA -- man beat his girlfriend's cat to death for scratching him, Freemansburg police said.

Scott Deater, 24, of the 1000 block of Crawford Street in Bethlehem was charged Monday with animal cruelty in the July 7 killing. He is free after posting $5,000 bail.

According to Northampton County Court records:

About 2:30 a.m., police were called to a home in the 600 block of Ramblewood Lane in Freemansburg by Courtney Zahorchak. She said Deater had killed a 1-year-old, black male cat belonging to his girlfriend, Adriana Marques.

Zahorchak and Marques had left the apartment about 9:30 p.m. July 6, leaving Deater alone with the cat. He later sent them a text message saying he had injured the pet.

When police arrived at the apartment, the walls and floor were spattered with blood and the cat was dead on the living room floor. Deater was packing clothes to leave and admitted killing the cat, saying it had scratched him.

The cat was wet, and when police asked Deater what had happened, he said he had thrown it into a tub filled with water because the cat didn't like water.

Deater appeared to have thrown the cat around the apartment, police said, and the animal appeared to have a broken leg with bone exposed.

Deater told police that at one point, he tried to revive the cat but couldn't save it.

He had a minor cut on his finger.
