Police say a number of people watched the incident unfold right outside a gas station near S.E. 44th and I-35, and called police.
Terry Wright works at the Phillips 66 on S.E. 44th and I-35.
Thursday night, he was doing his normal tasks, which included taking out the trash.
He says his routine was anything but ordinary when he helped stop something horrible from happening.
“I was taking our trash out outside, and I just heard a puppy yelling. And I looked over by the street, and the guy was punching his dog, body slamming it, lifting it over his head and slamming it down,” Wright said.
Fortunately, Wright had his cell phone and called police.
He said officers were there in minutes, but not before the man allegedly went after witnesses who were there trying to help the dog.
“They tried to pull over to stop him. And the guy, he was trying to coax his dog back to him, And then he started talking back to the guy in the car that was trying to stop the situation, and he went super crazy and chased the car,” Wright said.
Police arrested Tony Fisher, a homeless man, on animal cruelty charges.
They say he appeared to be drunk.
“The man’s wife was there, she said he became angry because the dog wouldn’t do what it was supposed to do. Clearly, that’s behavior that someone cannot legally engage in,” MSgt. Gary Knight, with the Oklahoma City Police Department, said
A veterinarian has checked out the puppy, and thankfully he’s going to be okay.
We’re told Fisher wants the puppy back, but animal welfare officials say that won’t happen until the case is resolved.
Fisher is being held in the Oklahoma County Jail on a $2,000 bond.
