Omaha couple hospitalized after dog attack

NEBRASKA -- An Omaha couple is recovering after being attacked by a dog near the town of Martell Saturday morning.

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Stephanie Lawyer and Andrew Powell went to Mary Kumpost’s home at 14005 SW 42nd St. around 10:30 a.m. to purchase a puppy.

Kumpost’s 5-year-old Dutch Shepherd, named Glock, somehow escaped its 6-foot-tall kennel and bit both Lawyer and Powell, the police report said.

The attack was unprovoked, according to the report. Both Lawyer and Powell were taken to Bryan West with multiple cuts and bite wounds to their left elbows, back and thighs.

The report said Lawyer and Powell’s injuries were not life-threatening, and the dog’s rabies vaccination was valid through May 2016.

The dog will be confined for 10 days prior to a veterinary exam, the report said. Deputies said on Sunday that no citations have been given.

Mary Kumpost is well-known among the Lincoln community for her work training police dogs.

In 2002, tragedy struck Kumpost's family when a 2-year-old German shepherd the family was training for the Lincoln Police Department escaped its kennel and killed her 4-year-old son.
